Why was Black T established?

To modernise stage construction. We replace slow, labour-intensive manual building with CAD/CAM modelling, CNC prefabrication and proprietary structural components.

How does the Black T Stage System differ from traditional stick-built construction?

Stick-built stages are measured, cut and fitted by hand from standard softwood battens, with acoustic pads positioned on site rather than at the factory. It is a well-established method, but doing the work on-site makes time the largest variable in most stage builds.Black T moves that work off site. Every system starts as a CAD/CAM design and is then CNC-machined from phenol-coated, stage-grade birch plywood box frames. The acoustic pads are custom dual-stage, with built-in deflection limiters, and they sit in CNC-routed, factory-cut notches so that isolation remains even across the entire surface. Components turn up ready to assemble. Site downtime, disruption and waste all drop, and so does project risk.

The Black T Stage System is manufactured exclusively from stage-grade plywood, a high-density, structural-grade plywood engineered specifically to meet the heavy load, stability, and acoustic requirements of professional performance spaces like theatres, opera houses, and auditoriums.Stage-grade plywood is made from dense, multi-laminate birch offering superior density, bending strength and screw-holding power compared to softwoods like pine or spruce. It is fully recyclable and incorporates a bio-based adhesive technology, replacing fossil-derived phenol with renewable lignin. This significantly reduces the product's carbon footprint and VOC emissions while maintaining the same high levels of strength, durability, and performance.By substituting fossil-based materials with natural, renewable binders, we deliver a more sustainable solution without compromising the technical properties of the plywood. In fact, stage-grade birch plywood has superior mechanical properties in elasticity, bonding and bending.Stage-grade plywood has high load-bearing capacity and stiffness. It is engineered to support extreme point loads and dynamic force from heavy rolling scenery, automated stage machinery, scissor lifts and performer impact without flexing or sagging.The panels are phenol coated on one or both faces.
